My quilt journey started with taking lessons at my local quilt shop. As a beginner, I thought to start with wall hangings. For each class, the completed quilt would be displayed. One of those quilts used yo-yos to depict flowers which meandered across the quilt. I had never seen dimension added to a quilt before. The flowers appeared to reach out to me, but at the same time pull me into the scene. I was intrigued by that reaction. I wondered what would happen if I added dimension throughout a quilt. Below is my first attempt at making a 3D Art Quilt. It is called Cozy Moments.

Why Quilts with Depth? What initially started out as a creative exploration had a rather surprising result. Adding depth to a quilt brought the scene to life. It felt as if I could actually step into the scene!

How do you add depth to a quilt? There are several techniques, such as adding polyester toy stuffing, embroidery, beads, buttons, and colorful beading wire.

However, the weight of these additions requires using a construction technique that is unique to dimensional quilts. I look forward to sharing this technique with you in a future blog post!
