My quilt journey started with wall hangings, one of which incorporated yo-yos as flower petals. The flowers appeared to reach out to me, but at the same time pull me into the scene. I was intrigued by that reaction. Was it due to simply adding dimension to the flowers? Hmmm. What if I were to add dimension throughout a quilt?
Why Quilts with Depth? What initially started out as a creative exploration had a rather surprising result. Adding dimension brought a quilt scene to life and allowed me to tap into memories that the scene evoked. In other words, adding physical depth added emotional depth as well.
How do you add depth to a quilt? There are several techniques, such as adding polyester toy stuffing, embroidery, beads, buttons, and colorful beading wire.
However, the weight of these additions requires using a construction technique that is unique to dimensional quilts. I look forward to sharing this technique with you in a future blog post!
