I love quilts with Christmas themes, so I was inspired to design one of my own. What a fabulous time I had imaging what I would include and then pondering how to depict it!

Cabin Christmas is now complete, just in time for “Christmas in July,” and I am so excited to share it with you.

Over the next several weeks, I will reveal this project one layer at a time.

If you are familiar with my 3D art quilts, you know that they all start with the same foundation: quilted muslin. You can think of it as the canvas for your quilt. As the weight of the 3D additions is too much for a single layer of fabric to accommodate, quilts with depth have a unique construction technique. The quilt top is called the background fabric and is attached on top of the quilted muslin. All applique, embroidery, and notions are attached not only to the background fabric but to the quilted muslin as well.

Now, a cabin’s foundation consists of its ceiling, floor, and walls, so let’s start there.

As this cabin’s elements come from nature, notice the tin ceiling, slate floor, and log walls. I carefully chose fabric to depict each of these materials. Each week I will reveal a new layer, so be sure to check back often.

Can you guess what the next layer will be? Hint: it is the heart of the cabin!
