Quilted muslin is the canvas for your masterpiece! All fabric and notions are attached to the muslin to support the weight of these additions.

Traditionally, a completed quilt top is placed over a layer of batting and backing, respectively. However with dimensional quilts, the weight of the additions is too much for a single layer of fabric (quilt top) to accommodate. Therefore, quilts with depth have a unique construction technique.

The quilt top is called the background fabric and is attached to quilted muslin. All applique, embroidery, and notions are attached not only to the background fabric, but to the quilted muslin as well. And, since the batting is used during construction, you only need to add borders and a backing to finish the quilt. Follow the steps below to learn how easy this technique is to achieve.

  • Step 1: Center the background fabric over the quilted muslin. Pin in place.
  • Step 2: Baste together, 3/8″ from background edges.
  • Step 3: Sew all embellishments to both the quilted muslin and the background fabric.

Once your quilt scene is complete, borders will be added to frame and finish your masterpiece.
